ULC Teens
Create Short Films
Under the
direction of Peter Harmon, a Film Major at Towson State College, ULC Teens created
three short films that premiered this summer. Our appreciation goes out to
Maggie Moo’s, Immaculate Conception School
and Flexible Family Fun and Fitness
Center for providing
the filming sites.
ULC Student Meets President Bush
In March 2005 our own Curtis Jones, was given the opportunity to meet with
President Bush and was noted in a speech that the President gave during a
Faith-Based Initiatives Conference. Curtis, who participated with ULC since
the age of 11, graduated of Penn
State University
with a degree in Telecommunications. This was an incredible honor for Curtis
and a wonderful example for our younger children of what can happen when you
stay on the right path.
White House Annual Easter Egg Roll
2006
Our grade school students were invited to attend the annual White House
Easter Egg Roll on Easter Monday. The invitation came through the US Freedom
Corps. Though the rain poured down, the kids were having a great time rolling
eggs and shaking hands with some of their favorite characters. The morning
ended with a bag of goodies complete with a chocolate bunny!
Gold Box Holds Unexpected Blessing
-- 2005
Judge Harry T. Edwards surprised Director Sherry Woods with a check for
$27,000.00 for the Judge Harry T. Edwards Foundation. The check was wrapped
in a beautiful gold box and presented to Sherry at ULC’s
annual Christmas Program and Family Dinner.
Brightening the Holidays for ULC
Kids -- 2006
Families from National Presbyterian Church (NPC) created holiday activity
baskets for every ULC family. The baskets were designed to promote family
time during the holidays. Middle school students and their parents from NPC
came that evening and helped to serve dinner.
Media Highlights:
• Comcast highlighted ULC in a five-minute piece on CNN spring of 2006
• Article on ULC
published in Washington Woman Magazine September 2003.
Exert from article: Ask Jennifer Hines what brought her to the UNIQUE
Learning Center and she won’t say it was
her career track……“What led me here was God, “ Jennifer says. “I can’t say I was
looking to work with kids. But this is definitely exactly what I was supposed
to be doing.” Sherry too was drawn to UNIQUE by a higher force –
a force strong enough to uproot her from Minnesota
and transplant her here (Washington).
“I got a very clear message that Washington
was where I was supposed to be. I felt a confirmation that it was
right,” Sherry says. “But I had no desire to start all over. I
was quite content [to stay] in Minnesota
and to ‘do good’ right in my hometown.
It became a major matter of faith”.
